Befriending

We are the only charity offering adults (18 years and above) one to one on-going recovery support through our befriending service. This service links people who are struggling with an eating disorder with someone who has recovered. A befriender’s knowledge and experience of recovery provides the person with hope, encouragement and guidance.

Our team of regional befrienders offers support to anyone who is working on recovery from an eating disorder. Our befrienders all have personal experience of eating disorders and have been recovered for a sufficient amount of time for them to be able to provide support. All of our befrienders receive training prior to becoming a befriender, which covers calling guidelines, best practice, confidentiality and listening skills amongst other things.

People who ask for a befriender are usually linked with someone who has a similar experience to their own. The befriending relationship operates by telephone for 6 months.

Befriending is not a counselling service, but a professional guided support with some goals that both sides work together to achieve. It should be an additional service to other professional input, i.e. medical monitoring and psychological/emotional support.
